Thank you for taking interest in our study resources.  The following downloadable files include sections of reading material accompanied with review questions to help ensure comprehension, or encourage discussion of the material included.  You are encouraged to take turns in reading wherever there are paragraph breaks.  For long paragraphs there are additionally triangular ▶ marks.  These indicate suggested mid-paragraph break points.  They are not part of the original document.  In some cases discussion questions are found at the end of the document, while in other cases they are in occasional sections parallel to the text.  Separate PDF documents are included with suggested answers.

The Westminster Assembly’s “Directory for Public Worship.”

Individual Lesson Q/A PDFs — 2025.

This series covers the original Public Worship Directory from the Second Reformation.  It was adopted in 1645.  Although model prayers are suggested, this should not be mistaken as a liturgy.  Strongly Biblical principles are observed, including the singing of Psalms rather than uninspired hymns, and the elimination of liturgical holydays such as Christmas and Easter.  Occasional supplementary material is included on topics such as the Lord’s Supper and Burial.  This directory was adopted as part of the Covenanted Reformation in Scotland, England, and Ireland.

The Westminster Assembly’s “Form of Presbyterial Church Government.”

Individual Lesson Q/A PDFs — 2026.

This series covers the original Propositions for Church Government and Ordination from the Westminster Assembly.  These were also adopted by the Church of Scotland in 1645.  Supplementary material for this series is taken from the Scottish Books of Discipline and the Westminster Assembly’s Directory for Church Government, which discusses Separation from Churches and includes a directory for Church Censures.

The Reformed Presbytery’s “Explanation and Defence of the Terms of Communion.”

Individual Lesson Q/A PDFs — 2025.

This Explanation and Defence presents a synopsis of the Principles of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, as it stands distinct from various other Presbyterian bodies.  The introductory portion presents a defence of the use of Terms of Communion.  The remaining section reviews the particular Terms of Communion used in the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the early 1800s.  This is largely relevant for later Covenanter churches.  The authors give a strong emphasis to certain aspects of the Westminster Confession of Faith which were then (as now) challenged by other churches.

Samuel Rutherford’s “Trial and Triumph of Faith.”

Individual Lesson Q/A Word DOCs — 2001.

This book presents the contents of a series of sermons from Samuel Rutherford relating to the topics of Faith and Justification.  The course of the discussion provides a refutation of Arminianism and several points of the Antinomian theology of the 1600s.  Some of these discussion will be particularly useful to modern readers as the answers to Antinomian errors are often fully relevant as answers to Hyper-calvinist errors.

This book includes a thorough discussion of the Establishment Principle and consideration of the topic of the Lord Jesus Christ’s Mediatorial Dominion.  The Author presents from Holy Scripture the case for viewing Christ’s Mediatorial Dominion as being comprehensive of all created order and authority, therefore including both Church and State, though the Church is more properly “his kingdom.”

This series relates to church controversy among Presbyterians in America in the late 1700s, when the attempt to merge two churches led to the formation of three churches, and left many devoted Christians with no ministerial support in the newly formed United States.  Holding fast the doctrines of Jesus, they were obliged to go without preaching, sacraments, or a structure to enforce church discipline.  Yet they met together as fellowship societies, maintained a firm Christian character, and found help from the Reformed Presbyteries back in Scotland and Ireland.  The first two lessons below contain history from the time period, and the last three lessons are a review of a document from the Reformed Presbytery of Scotland.
